Birdwatching at Forsinard Scotland. Free guide to the UK's best birdwatching sites

Special Birds; breeding Red and Black-throated Diver, Merlin, Greenshank.

Comprising almost 24,711 acres/10,000 ha of 'blanket bog', the deep peatlands of Forsinard lie at the heart of the internationally important Flow Country of Caithness and Sutherland. Birds including golden plovers, dunlins and merlins breed on the reserve. The RSPB are conserving the bogs while encouraging limited access via the visitor centre at Forsinard railway station, a bog pool trail, regular guided walks and road-side viewing.

Many of the most important species live out in remote pools and lochs in the heart of the Flow Country including red-throated and black-throated divers, common scoter and otters.

However, it is unlikely that most visitors will see these species. More common around the trails and the main road are golden plover, dunlin, greenshank, hen harrier, skylark and meadow pipits.
