Glenmore Forest Park

Birdwatching at Glenlore Forest Park Scotland. Free guide to the UK's best birdwatching sites

This woodland was the second Forest Park created by the Forestry Commission back in 1948, and remains its most northerly. Glenmore holds one of the few remaining pockets of ancient Caledonian Pinewood in Scotland.

Although the woodland has been here for thousands of years, much of it has changed because of the long history of forestry in the glen. As the forest is managed for timber, work is ongoing  to restore native species as much as possible. There are a range of different habitats, like wet, boggy places among the trees that are perfect for dragonflies and damselflies.

Loxch Morlich can be extremely busy with many types of human activities but it is possible to explore a multitude of great birding locations away from the loch that remain undisturbed. Crossbill, Scottish Crossbill, siskin, redstart in spring and birds of prey such as golden eagle and osprey should be found relatively easily.

It is also possible to cycle from Aviemore to the Glenmore visitor centre on a purpose built cycle route (6 miles).
