Lochindorb

Birdwatching at Lochindorb Scotland. Free guide to the UK's best birdwatching sites

A popular spot with the various bird tour companies, Lochindorb (from the Scottish Gaelic: Loch nan Doirb meaning "loch of the minnows") is a freshwater loch north of Grantown on Spey in the Highland council area of Scotland. In the loch there is an island, which is now thought to have been artificially created, and on that island are the ruins of Lochindorb Castle, a former stronghold of the Clan Comyn. The loch is a popular spot with birdwatchers, as the loch is a regular spot for black-throated diver ,geese and birds of prey such as hen harrier. At the southeast edge of the loch there is a small patch of coniferous forest.

The loch can be viewed from the minor road which runs from the A939 to the B9007. There are numerous common gull colonies along the roadside so visiting birders should park in the obvious parking areas away from these. The B9007 back down to Carrbridge is also an excellent road for birds of prey. A telescope will be very useful when viewing Lochindorb.
