Larks, Pipits and Wagtails (Collins New Naturalist)
There is something especially attractive about the larks, pipits and wagtails. All have a somewhat insubstantial quality about them and many a degree of elegance and ethereal magic. The larks and pipits are on the whole cryptically coloured, yet they are able to draw your attention with their display flights and a range of songs from the simple repetition of notes to utterances of the greatest complexity, variety and mood. Wagtails have a unique attraction, which is shared with the areas they inhabit.
Pipits and Wagtails of Europe, Asia and North America
Wagtails are noted for their bold plumage patterns and extensive racial variation. Pipits are a large and difficult group which invariably causes vexation to birders on both sides of the Atlantic. This guide covers the 26 species of northern hemisphere pipits and wagtails in detail. It treats identification in the field and in the hand, and includes colour plates, detailed distribution maps and sonograms of songs and calls.
