West Freugh is a former RAF airfield located in Wigtownshire, five miles (8 km) south east of Stranraer and comprises various interesting habitats including rough grassland, heather bog and coniferous forest.

Probably best in winter but worth a stopover at any time of the year. West Freugh is an excellent site for hunting raptors with short-eared owl (main picture) , long-eared owl, common buzzard, sparrowhawk, kestrel and hen harrier regular.It also hosts a regular flocks of both greenland white-fronted (see Youtube video below) and pink-footed geese. It is the most reliable site in Dumfries & Galloway for grey partridge.
