Whitburn Coastal park and surrounding area

A true migration hotspot especially in Autumn with countless rarities including Pallas Grasshopper Warbler Sept 2012. The list of rarities ringed here is very impressive (see video section). The Durham Bird Club have a hide here as this is an excellent seawatching point (I'm old enough to remember the old wooden hide !) Purple Sandpiper, oystercatcher and Turnstone are regular in winter along with many other waders that gather further along the coastal path at Whitbun steel. Seawatching in winter produces divers, grebes, scoter etc with snow bunting regular along the path and particularly at 'Jackies beach' which has breeding ringed plover in summer. Peregrine and merlin are also regular. Depending on season the coastal park will always offer a good day's birding.
In autumn it is advisable to explore the following areas (from south to north) :-

Cornthwaite park, Whitburn cricket club , Whitburn hall, and Whitburn parish church area. Countless rarities have been discovered here and it is worth checking the many trees and shrubs : flycatchers, yellow browed warbler, pallas's warbler etc etc

Whitburn cemetary and allotments to the rear. Again many rarities recorded over the years.

Whitburn coastal park up to Souter lighthouse. The Local Nature Reserve is situated just east of the Shearwater Estate. There is a car park south of Whitburn on Mill lane. There is also one north of Whitburn on the coastal path. Regular shrikes
