The Laws Guide to Drawing Birds

John Muir Laws’s guide to drawing birds is itself winged, soaring between a devotion not only to art but also to the lives, forms, and postures of the birds themselves. Here, artistic technique and the exquisite details of natural history intertwine, and drawing becomes the vehicle for seeing. As Laws writes, “To draw feathers, you must understand how feathers grow, overlap, and insert into the body. To create the body, you must have an understanding of the bird’s skeletal structure.

Drawing and Painting Birds

Birds are much admired, revered and envied. They have featured in art for many thousands of years and our fascination with them continues. They do though pose a challenge to paint and are not always the most cooperative of models. By understanding their anatomy and recognising their type, the artist can learn a shorthand way to capture movement and attitude. With technique and colour mastered, style develops and a special scene can be captured uniquely forever. Here, lifelong birdwatcher and artist Tim Wootton explains the bird types and how identifying specific similarities can help the artist. He gives advice on painting in the field; describes how to paint plumage and birds in flight and demonstrates how to compose a painting with emphasis on the birds habitat. This beautifully illustrated new book also gives insights into painting birds from 30 leading artists, as well as illustrations of their work, including John Busby, Robert Bateman and Charles Tunnicliffe.

Bird Art: Drawing birds using graphite & coloured pencils

Few creatures symbolise the beauty of the natural world better than birds. Their delicacy, poise and power combine to create an irresistible subject for the artist. In this his first book, award-winning artist Alan Woollett captures perfectly, in breath-taking detail, the exquisite beauty of birds in their natural environments using graphite and coloured pencils, often combining both media in the same composition.

Capturing the Essence: Techniques for Bird Artists

In this stunningly beautiful book, bird artist William T. Cooper explores and demonstrates all aspects of drawing and painting birds. Renowned for his gorgeous and accurate wildlife renderings, Cooper here explains in detail how to create a true impression of a bird's appearance. The author describes his own experiences among birds in the wild, discusses bird anatomy, and lays out the essential principles of realistic painting. He guides both seasoned artists and enthusiastic beginners through all the techniques and processes involved in depicting birds anywhere in the world. In the first part of the book, Cooper covers materials, bird anatomy, methods of working from captive birds (in zoos, for example), and methods for working in the field. He places special emphasis on the artist's understanding of the subject and how this knowledge can be transformed into drawings and paintings. The second part of the book deals with watercolours, acrylics, and oil paints, explaining for each medium the step-by-step processes leading from beginning sketches to finished work.

Modern Wildlife Painting: Wildlife Art in the Twentieth Century

The 20th century has seen a widespread interest in wildlife and its identification and conservation. Paintings and prints have both stimulated and reflected this interest. Primarily a pursuit of the wealthy of the 19th century, wildlife art of the period most commonly depicted animals as quarry, as worthy adversaries of the hunter. Today, artists are more likely to focus on the vulnerability of animals to man, and to further the cause of their conservation and the preservation of their habitats. This volume, in 12 chapters, examines the various forms that wildlife art takes. Each chapter is illustrated by paintings or prints that, in the author's view, best represent the genre. The work of 90 artists is shown.

The Bird in Art

There has until now been no proper study of the bird in art, despite our fascination with birds, and despite the wealth of complex meanings associated with them in different cultures. A number of pagan gods are linked with birds, and dynasties and empires have adopted powerful birds as their symbols. Birds feature in numerous creation myths, and represent the human soul in many religions. We can trace bird imagery from the cave paintings of the Paleolithic era to the present day, and across all world cultures: there are painted, drawn, mosaic, sculpted, embroidered and ceramic birds, and birds as marginal illuminations or the subject of meticulous ornithological studies. This exquisite new book investigates the significance of the bird in 250 beautifully reproduced works of art, both ancient and modern. Nine chapters - on such themes as the mythical bird, the Eastern bird and the domestic bird - explore in detail a rich and rewarding collection of paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures, creating a book that will enchant art lovers and anyone interested in ornithology.

Wild in Europe (Wildlife Art Series)

Born in Rotterdam, the wildlife artist Renso Tamse began drawing at the age of five. This book charts his journeys through Europe - from Ireland to Cyprus, from Spain to Scandinavia - in pursuit of its flora and fauna. Baby Bird Portraits by George Miksch Sutton

George Miksch Sutton is one of the best known and most beloved bird artists of the twentieth century. This marvellous book presents thirty-five paintings of downy chicks, nestlings, and fledglings painted from life by Sutton. The exquisite watercolours, housed in the Field Museum of Natural History, span three decades and depict nineteen species of North American birds. Many of the paintings are reproduced here for the first time. Sutton was fond of painting young birds from life and of recording their developmental changes. Marked by delicate brushwork and subtle colour variations, his paintings document characteristic features of the birds’ species as well as capturing the poses and attributes that make each bird seem so unique. Some paintings show not only juvenal plumage but also head portraits of adult plumage. The nineteen species include familiar garden birds such as cardinals, Great Plains inhabitants such as the grassland sparrows, and upland and wetland birds, including bobwhites, moorhens, and sandpipers.

Aig an Oir at the Edge: The Society of Wildlife Artists Visit Scotland's Atlantic Oakwoods

Lying at the very edge of Europe, the magical but little-known Atlantic oak woods of the west coast of Scotland are lush, temperate rainforests that form an internationally important habitat for plants and wildlife. The Eighteenth Century (v.2) (Great Bird Paintings of the World)

This is the second part of a five-volume series. This book presents a representative selection of colour pictures of birds painted during the 18th century. It portrays the artists' increasing sensitivity to nature. A detailed text accompanies the pictures and reveals the growth in the popularity of watercolour as a medium for painting birds. In the 18th century, several artists continued to produce bird paintings in the same style and composition of the Old Masters. When a new sensitivity to nature became universal, naturalists recorded, named and illustrated species with increasing skills. Old myths were replaced by observation and evidence. Exotic birds were being discovered in the newly-explored countries of North America, India and, at the end of the century, Australia. This age of discovery was also a period when the potential of watercolour painting was developed and proved to be the perfect medium for depicting birds. In bird art, as in so many other aspects of 18th century life, this was an age of sense and sensitivity.

Bird Illustrators: Some Artists in Early Lithography

Some magnificently illustrated bird books were published in the Victorian era, in responce to the demand for accurate coloured pictures of our own native birds and the new, often exotic, species which at the time were being dicovered in all parts of the world.
How these books came to be written, and the story of the authors, artists and craftsmen who produced them, is the subject of this book.An assessment of the merits of their output and achievements is made. The author, in this volume, has restricted herself to those works where the coloured plates were produced by lithography.William Swainson, Edward Lear and John Gould were among the first to adopt lithography for illustrating their fine bird books. Many interesting and talented artists followed them including Archibold Thorburn and George Lodge.
The author's researches reveal much fascinating detail about the lives of these artists, as well as providing the reader with a wealth of facts about the books which they illustrated.

The Art of the Bird: The History of Ornithological Art

The human history of depicting birds dates to as many as 40,000 years ago, when Paleolithic artists took to cave walls to capture winged and other beasts. But the art form has reached its peak in the last four hundred years. In The Art of the Bird, devout birder and ornithologist Roger J. Lederer celebrates this heyday of avian illustration in forty artists' profiles, beginning with the work of Flemish painter Frans Snyders in the early 1600s and continuing through to contemporary artists like Elizabeth Butterworth, famed for her portraits of macaws. Stretching its wings across time, taxa, geography, and artistic style--from the celebrated realism of American conservation icon John James Audubon, to Elizabeth Gould's nineteenth-century renderings of museum specimens from the Himalayas, to Swedish artist and ornithologist Lars Jonsson's ethereal watercolour's.

Bird Life and the Painter

R B Talbot-Kelly. Studio publications 1955.
' R.B Talbot Kelly, at present Art Master at Rugby School, is probably one of today's greatest and most sympathetic painters of birds and has, through long and close study, acquired what he would term " some fraction of understanding of a bird's way of life." His experience transcends a mere knowledge of anatomy and habitat, or the superficial appeal of colourful plumage, and has given him a feeling for a bird's reactions to its own world; a feeling which can be sensed in the subtle qualities of his work." The Craftsmanship needed to paint birds," he says, " is no different from that required for landscape or figure composition, but the thinking which precedes the making of a work of art is special to each attempt. "To promote such thinking is the object of this book. It has been designed to equip the student of bird life with the means for extracting the fullest experience and delight from a subject of tremendous vitality. The many fine reproductions of the author's paintings, of which 16 are in colour, are masterpieces of delicacy and sensitive perception in a variety of treatments. This book will appeal as much to the birdwatcher and nature student as to the painter of birds.

Drawn to the Edge (Wildlife Art Series)

This inspiring collection of paintings, drawings and writings by artist John Threlfall captures a journey along Britain's coast, from sandy beaches and sea cliffs in the north, to rocky shores and estuaries in the south. Threlfalls fascination with the shoreline, its shifting colours and dramatic forms, is outdone only by his attraction to its wildlife: seals, sanderlings, guillemots and curlews are some of the fauna that provide the focal point for his beautiful artwork.

True to Form (Wildlife Art Series)

Experiencing wildlife in its element provides David with an insight which further drives his inquisitiveness and stimulates his need to paint. Sketching and painting outside has fashioned the look of David's work. 'Fieldwork makes you see form rather than detail, it encourages a more concise spontaneous approach.'

New Forest Painters

Designated a National Park in 2005, the New Forest contains some of the last remaining tracts of lowland heath in western Europe, as well as ancient forest and coastal land, and a host of rare flora and fauna is associated with each environment. This celebration of the area is the collected work of six local artists exploring the varied landscapes, the nature and wildlife and some of the human activity that is also part of the life of the forest.

Up River (The song of the Esk)

In 'Up River', acclaimed nature artist Darren Woodhead captures in painting and words the natural beauty of the countryside around Carlops and the valley of the North Esk river. Over two years as Artist in Residence supported by the Orcome Trust, and working in close conjunction with the local community, he produced over 350 drawings and paintings. Together with diary entries which describe mood, weather and the subjects portrayed, he creates a magnificent record of the area - the hills, the flora and fauna - contrasting the barrenness and bleakness of winter with the explosive colours of spring and summer. He also touches on the technicalities of working in extreme conditions, which adds another dimension to the understanding of an environment so expertly captured in his paintings.

Birds of Town and Village

This book will make an ideal gift for all bird-lovers, for it has a twofold purpose. As the author puts it in his Introduction, apart from the purely aesthetic appeal of the illustrations, it is hoped 'that the pictures and text together may form a reference book which will not only lead to the identification of some of our commonest birds, but also stimulate interest in their habits and behaviour. Another more subtle intention is that once these basic 56 species are thoroughly known, the observer will become so interested that he or she will desire to name any of the 300 or so other species which may be encountered in Britain'.

Troubled Waters: Trailing the Albatross

A mysterious decline in the populations of albatrosses and other seabirds nesting in remote locations in the Southern Ocean has been attributed to their ensnarement in the tackle of long-line fishing vessels. Artist Bruce Pearson highlights the problem in this portfolio, which includes his paintings and sketches made in South Georgia in the 1970s as well as recent paintings and drawings of southern seabirds and the fishing trade that threatens their survival.

Birdscape

In "Birdscape", and the Channel 4 TV series it accompanies, the author has taken six of Britain's prime birdwatching areas, and arguably some of the most beautiful areas, and looked at the birds that they contain: the cliff-top peregrines of Cornwall, the oakwoods of Wales and their precious red kites; the wildfowl of the Ouse Washes; the divers of the Scottish Flow Country; the owls of the north Norfolk marshes; and the nocturnal nightjars of the Dorset heaths. The combination of a painter and a naturalist provides a fresh view of these birds. This is not only a book about the birds of Britain. It is also a book about the countryside as a whole, including the flowers and the people who share it with the birds including plants, such as the heathers that now adorn the Dorset heaths, are threatened by on all sides of housing estates.

An Artist on Migration

In 1984 Bruce Pearson, famous for his paintings in the book "A Countryside in Winter", came to Collins with an idea. He would pack his studio into his rucksack and follow the migrating birds of Europe from the high Arctic to tropical Africa. As a painter, writer and ornithologist he was the ideal person to carry out this idea. This book is the result of his journey. During his travels, Bruce Pearson has visited all the major areas used by the birds in summer and winter; the wastes of Greenland and its birds that must synchronize their breeding perfectly or risk the hazard of freezing in the early onset of winter; the Ouse Washes of England, home to winter visitors from the high Arctic; and the sub-Saharan landscape where many of Europe's birds spend the winter and have suffered from the drought currently threatening all wildlife in the area. He has also stopped off at some of the bird's staging posts; he sees the huge flocks of waders on the marshes of Britain and Europe as they stop to replenish supplies on their journey; the flocks of wheeling birds of prey over the Bosporus, crossing from one continent to the other by the shortest possible route; and the sight of waves of tiny migrants heading out over the open Mediterranean or taking on the vast and inhospitable Sahara.

Far from Land: The Mysterious Lives of Seabirds

Seabirds evoke the spirit of the earth's wildest places. They spend large portions of their lives at sea, often far from land, and nest on beautiful and remote islands that humans rarely visit. Thanks to the development of increasingly sophisticated and miniaturized devices that can track their every movement and behaviour, it is now possible to observe the mysterious lives of these remarkable creatures as never before. This beautifully illustrated book takes you on a breath-taking journey around the globe to reveal where these birds actually go when they roam the sea, the tactics they employ to traverse vast tracts of ocean, the strategies they use to evade threats, and more.

A Sparrowhawk's Lament: How British Breeding Birds of Prey Are Faring

Britain is home to fifteen species of breeding birds of prey, from the hedgerow-hopping Sparrowhawk to the breath-taking White-tailed Eagle. In this handsomely illustrated book, acclaimed British filmmaker and naturalist David Cobham offers unique and deeply personal insights into Britain's birds of prey and how they are faring today. He delves into the history of these magnificent birds and talks in depth with the scientists and conservationists who are striving to safeguard them. In doing so, he profiles the writers, poets and filmmakers who have done so much to change the public's perception of birds of prey. There are success stories--five birds of prey that were extinct have become reestablished with viable populations--but persecution is still rife. Featuring drawings by famed wildlife artist Bruce Pearson, this book reveals why we must cherish and celebrate our birds of prey, and why we neglect them at our peril.

A Sparrow's Life's as Sweet as Ours: In Praise of Birds and Seasons

A Sparrow's Life's as Sweet as Ours is a collection based on the Bird of the Month column in The Oldie, which is written by an instigator of the magazine, John McEwen and illustrated by renowned wildlife artist Carry Akroyd.

In this beautiful new book, painter and printmaker Carry Akroyd presents a sequence of her small

The Wood is Sweet

Clare's shorter poems, in this selection by David Powell, enhanced by the energy of Carry Akroyd's evocative linocuts, take us into the delightful rural world which Clare explored more closely and expressed more perfectly than any other poet.

Found in the Fields

Brand new 176-page hardback book from specialist art publisher Mascot Media on the paintings and prints of Northamptonshire artist Carry Akroyd.

Nature Powers and Spells

Carry Akroyd's characteristically colourful and organised landscape images examine the relationship between humans and wildlife. This book samples work from twenty years; Carry's printmaking and painting over that time reflect various influences, not least a sense of history in the landscape. Her observations make connection with the nineteenth century poet John Clare, and illustrate how they both reacted to the sudden agricultural modernisations that transformed their local countryside.

Wildlife in Printmaking (Wildlife Art Series)

A collection of work by 22 artists whose delight is to experiment with the vagaries of printmaking, refining their ideas to fit a process, or inventing a process to suit their ideas. Their images are triggered by encounters with wildlife. They know the habits and habitats of wildlife and respond to it with interpretation full of freshness, imagination and vivacity.

Meadows (British Wildlife Collection)

Meadows, the second volume of a major new series of books on British natural history, provides one of the most wide-ranging and eloquent treatments of this most quintessential British habitat. Yet the flower-rich hay meadows that have inspired writers and artists for hundreds of years have almost disappeared from our countryside. In this exceptional work, George Peterken, one of our most respected ecologists, brings together years of research and discovery from his travels across Britain and Europe, as well as an understanding borne out of caring for his own meadows, to produce a book that will put this often misunderstood habitat back in the public’s eye. Filled with beautiful images of meadows and their denizens, this is a book everyone with an interest in this iconic habitat will want to own.

Tweet of the Day: A Year of Britain's Birds from the Acclaimed Radio 4 Series

Imagine a jazz musician, improvising on a theme. Then imagine that he is able to play half a dozen instruments - not one after another, but almost simultaneously, switching effortlessly between instruments and musical styles with hardly a pause for breath. If you can countenance that, you are halfway towards appreciating the extraordinary song of the nightingale . . .

Thaw

When a thunderstorm’s dark reverberations glimmer ‘in the night-sky of the head’, or when apricots generate an edible appreciation of ‘soft time’, we discover Charles Bennet’s lyrical and powerful poems revealing the impact of nature in memorable, unexpected and sometimes unusual ways.

This fascinating collection concerns itself with forms of melting: fluid interfaces between natural and human environments. Beginning and ending in gardens, it explores aspects of experience informed and affected by close observation. Time and again, whether in the form of a blackbird’s tuneful message, a seashell’s glossy interior, or the smell of fresh rain, our relationship with ecology is reinvigorated. Delighted, rapturous and occasionally disturbing, this is a collection enthralled by the sensual delights of the natural world and its creatures.

Woodland Flowers: Colourful Past, Uncertain Future

Observing the plants of the forest floor the flowers, ferns, sedges and grasses can be a vital way of understanding our relationship with British woodland. They tell us stories about its history and past management, and can be a visible sign of progress when we get conservation right. For centuries, woodland plants have also been part of our lives in practical ways as food and medicines, and they have influenced our culture through poetry, perfume and pub signs.

Rocky Shores (British Wildlife Collection)

Rocky Shores explores the species, communities and landscape of the narrow strip of land along our coastline. Limited in extent it may be, but no other habitat in Britain is as extreme and dynamic. As the tide ebbs and flows, physical and chemical conditions can alter dramatically in a matter of minutes, yet an impressive number of life forms have adapted and even thrive in these challenging conditions. Rock pools dotted across the shore contain unique pockets of diversity, while the strandline at the high-tide mark supports a curious community of microbes and invertebrates that in turn attract birds and mammals.

Shorelands Winter Diary

Found among Tunnicliffe's papers after his death in 1979 but only recently recognized, this manuscript was written as the sequel to "Shorelands Summer Diary". It completes his portrait of a year in the life of the natural history of Anglesey. From Tunnicliffe's practice of dating all his sketches, it has been possible to date the illustrations for this work in the collection at the Oriel Ynys Mon, the spectacular new gallery in Anglesey. Charles Tunnicliffe was one of the greatest British bird artists. In his hands, the written and painted observation of natural events combine to create a picture in colour, line and words of a lovely part of Wales, sanctuary to a profusion of birds in a glorious landscape of mountain, cliff and estuary.

Tunnicliffe's Birds (Measured drawings)

In his short book Bird Portraiture, published in 1945, Charles Tunnicliffe described his method of recording and studying birds' plumage.
"For some years, I have been in the habit of making careful measured drawings, in colour, of any dead bird which has come into my hands, providing it has been in fresh condition. Wherever possible I have drawn the birds exactly life size. I try to arrange them so that the upper surfaces, including that of the fully-open wing, are shown; the under surfaces with wings in the same position; a side view with wings closed, and any accurate studies of legs and feet, and drawings of single feathers - in fact, anything which I think may be of use."
In forty years of bird study, Tunnicliffe completed over 300 of these measured drawings; a selection from them is reproduced here.

BIRD PORTRAITURE: 'HOW TO DO IT' SERIES NO. 35

Nature-lovers, Ornithologists and artists will all delight in Mr Tunnicliffe's bird studies reproduced in colour and monochrome in this book. They are among his finest productions. C.F Tunnicliffe.' In my search for and study of birds, the mere's, pools and reservoirs of east and mid-Cheshire have, for many years, been favourite hunting grounds.  A collection of titles by, or illustrated by Donald Watson

The Hen Harrier

An acknowledged classic of narrative nature-writing, Donald Watson's The Hen Harrier was the culmination of a lifetime's study of this beautiful upland bird. A gentle, warm and wonderfully written book, The Hen Harrier stems from an age of 'amateur' conservation, from the pen of a man who cared deeply about birds and their habitats, especially of the Scottish borders where he conducted much of his research and painting. The book was among the last of a dying breed; it would be thirty years or more before writing on our natural history would again reach the heights of accessibility to nature-lovers exemplified by Donald Watson and his peers.

In Search of Harriers: Over the Hills and Far Away

The artwork in this lavishly illustrated book spans over fifty years of Donald's work and includes in excess of a hundred full colour paintings, along with numerous sketches and black and white illustrations. Mainly from private collections, many of these paintings have never previously been reproduced.
A stunning collection of harrier paintings including harriers both at their breeding and wintering grounds, as well as a selection of paintings of other avian species, within their natural habitats.

The Hen Harrier

Donald Watson. Artist, ornithologist and author, Donald Watson has made an especial study of the Hen Harrier Circus cyaneus over many years and his field notes and sketch books of this exceptional bird of prey go back to the 1940s.The book opens with the world distribution of the harrier family, then there is a fuller treatment of the Hen Harrier in Europe and North America (the Marsh Hawk),its history and present status. Further chapters detail hunting methods and prey selection, the breeding cycle, migration and distribution.

A Bird Artist in Scotland

Donald Watson's paintings of the landscape and birds of Scotland have been a source of delight for many years. In this attractive book he describes his passion for birds from childhood years in rural Surrey through military service among exotic species in Burma during the second world war to his post-war years birding on Scotland's moorland and islands before settling in Galloway, where he remained. Serious birdwatchers will remember Donald Watson's outstanding books, Birds of moor and mountain, The Hen Harrier and one pair of Eyes

One Pair of Eyes: Landscape and Birds

'One Pair of Eyes' includes more than eighty colour reproductions of Donald Watson's finest paintings, spanning close on half a century, as well as a comprehensive selection of his sketches and drawings. The thirty five chapters in this book relate not only to his artwork but also to many years of experience as ornithologist and countryman. This book is a magnificent collection of work by an esteemed artist, author and naturalist.
'...His birds are in real landscapes drawn or painted in the field, direct response to the artist's experience at the time: his eyes are implied by the title, but also his emotions, are crucially at work. This book is beautifully reproduced with 150 pages of fine essays...beautiful paintings and drawings.' Birds, RSPB Magazine

Looking at Birds: An Antidote to Field Guides

Langford Press is delighted to be launching a new series of books called Wildlife Art Techniques (WATs) with a work by the internationally highly respected artist John Busby. The aim of this series of book is to become a logical extension to the ongoing very popular Wilde Art Series (WAS) by showing many of the techniques used by current masters as included within the series.

Looking at Birds seeks to encourage the watcher to spend as long as possible looking at how the bird moves and behaves in order to get the real "jizz" of a living bird on paper.

Drawing Birds (RSPB)

This is a fully revised and updated new version of a popular RSPB handbook to the art and joy of drawing birds. John Busby beautifully conveys his own remarkable ability to capture the grace and motion of living birds, illustrating his ideas and suggestions with many examples of his own work. He also uses illustrations from over 45 other talented bird artists to demonstrate a variety of principles and techniques. The text covers a wealth of topics, including choice of media, sketching from life, composition and different ways of interpreting the subject matter. This is a beautiful and inspiring book which will appeal to aspiring artists and anyone who has ever been entranced by the beauty of birds.

Landmarks and Sea Wings

A beautiful compilation of drawings and paintings spanning decades of work, John Busby's latest book combines his passion for landscapes and birds. The author of the popular handbook "Drawing Birds" weaves the paintings and drawings together with descriptions of his travels far and wide, beginning with the Yorkshire of his youth, through Scotland, Greece, Hawaii and the Falklands to the Galapagos Islands.

Lines from Nature

John Busby (1928-2015) was a celebrated wildlife artist, illustrator and teacher who became widely known in the 1980s for his ground-breaking RSPB book Drawing Birds. His ability to capture the living essence of birds and other wildlife in deft, often minimal strokes of the pencil or brush is celebrated in this last of his books, in which he explores his favourite subjects from birds in the garden to seaside rock pools and tigers in India.

Birds in Mallorca

A guide for the birder or naturalist embarking on a holiday in Mallorca with illustrations of the island by the author. It examines all parts of Mallorca with regional accounts from the Salinas de Levant's saltpans in the south, to the northern Sierras and the coast and back lanes of Cala D'Or. Pat Bishop, with her late husband Eddie Watkinson, were honorary representatives of the RSPB on the island and were partly responsible for the setting up of the first nature reserve in the Albufera.

One Man's Island: Paintings and Sketches from the Isle of May

Keith Brockie's remarkable artistry and his extraordinary sensitivity to wildlife are superbly displayed in this book. It contains 150 exquisite paintings and sketches - from the island of May in the Firth of Forth, Scotland - that are breath-taking in their beauty and unparalleled in their fidelity to their subjects. The drawings represent not only a year's fieldwork on the island but also a decade of observation devoted to this important wildlife centre. The island of May, despite its small size and exposed location, contains an impressive variety of fauna and flora. Its internationally important seabird colonies are protected by law; it plays host to a wonderful variety of migrant birds each year; colourful plants carpet the ground; and seals swim in the seas around. All these aspects of the island's wildlife have been captured by Keith Brockie in a brilliant series of paintings and sketches, mainly in watercolour, pencil and crayon, which reward examination again and again.

Return to One Man's Island: Paintings and Sketches from the Isle of May

Keith Brockie's One Man's Island: Paintings and Sketches from the Isle of May (1984), immediately became one of the bestselling Scottish natural history books of all time. The combination of breathtaking wildlife images with notes and background information, captured unforgettably the beauty of nature, and in particular that of the Isle of May, a little gem of an island in the Firth of Forth. Since then Brockie has constantly returned to the Isle of May. From April through to October of 2010 he stayed on the island, working intensively to produce an entirely new set of drawings and paintings. With his eye for colour and characteristic attention to detail he has produced a huge number of artworks, mixing depictions of the majestic peregrine and white-tailed eagle with sketches of fluffy eider ducklings and kittiwake chicks. All the natural history of the island is represented, from its delicate maritime flowers to fish, crabs and lobsters. Return to One Man's Island will be the publishing event of the year for those who loved Brockie's original Isle of May book, as well as a whole new generation of readers and lovers of wildlife painting.

Mountain Reflections

In "Mountain Reflections" Keith Brockie paints a personal journey through the seasonal rhythms of the mountain hare and the ptarmigan, two prime examples of Arctic creatures which have evolved strategies to survive a harsh and inhospitable environment. Through illustrations he shows in detail how they relate to the landscape and its various textures and how their cryptic spring and autumn camouflage is moulted to a thick white coat during the winter months. He witnesses the vagaries of the climate from icy winter scenes to unseasonable June snowfalls which threaten incubating birds and new-born hare leverets.

Winter Birds

In this stunning book, Lars Jonsson celebrates and explores the beauty of the birds that surround him during the Swedish winter months. Inspired by the desolate, wintry landscapes, the dazzling light and the stark contract of colours he observes against the snow, Jonsson has created an unparalleled collection of art.

Birds and Light: The Art of Lars Jonsson

This work describes the life and work of one of the finest bird artists in history. Here, Lars Jonsson talks of a life's work made from studying and capturing the relationship between birds and light. This work is part autobiography and part exploration of technical method, and throughout it is a celebration of birds, wildlife and wild places. It is illustrated with reproduced artwork, including pages from his earliest sketchbooks, examples of his identification plates, through to the development and completion of finished canvases.

Birds of the Mediterranean and Alps

Lars Jonsson has been internationally acclaimed for the quality of his bird illustrations. In recent years, bird illustration has moved away from a purely taxonomic approach in which each subject has been faithfully illustrated in static and, in some cases, highly unnatural poses to one which with greater feeling tries to capture the essence of its subject Thus none of Lars Jonsson’s birds is in exactly the same posture. With great perception, he depicts their plumage, movement and character and shows them in their natural environment His work has, without doubt, set new standards for bird illustration.

Lars Jonsson's Birds: Paintings from a Near Horizon

Lars Jonsson is widely regarded as one of the greatest bird artists of all time. In his native Sweden he is national celebrity and there is even a museum dedicated to his art on his native Gotland. This new collection of paintings and drawings represents his work since the turn of the millennium. Once again, he returns to his favourite themes of birds in the wider landscape, featuring gulls, waders, ducks and raptors in particular. This sumptuous and irresistible volume has been produced to accompany a major exhibition of his work in Germany, Denmark and Austria, and will include short essays from the sculptor Kent Ullberg and museum curator Adam Harris.

A collection of titles by, or illustrated by Robert Gillmor

Robert Gillmor's Norfolk Bird Sketches

Artist's sketches are the building blocks for their final work. These drawings give the viewer a real insight into the workings of an artist's mind. This beautifully produced book includes a mixture of sketching styles. Robert has separated them into three groups: the very quick, loose, mono notes to record vigorous action, then more considered drawings of birds that are not particularly active, and watercolour or pencil studies of birds that remain still, either preening or feeding etc. All of these artworks have been painted outside from direct observation from locations along the North Norfolk coast. Robert's house looks out over the Wildlife Trusts first ever reserve in the UK, NWT Cley Marshes.

Pressing On: A Decade of New Linocuts

Wildlife artist Robert Gillmor relocated to Norfolk 20 years ago, and the county has been a major source of inspiration for the hundreds of linocuts created since 1998. It becomes clear from a new book of his work that the close proximity to key birdwatching sites and bewitching locations has enabled him to expand greatly his repertoire of prints, book jackets and even stamp designs.

Cutting Away: The Linocuts of Robert Gillmor

After describing his working methods, the author writes of the inspiration behind the 90 prints illustrated. This often evokes memories which allow him to wander into autobiographical anecdotes, thoughts about the artistic process, and any other ideas that a particular print provokes.

In the final section of the book he demonstrates the use of linocuts for posters and dust jackets, especially those he designed for the prestigious New Naturalist series.

Birds, Blocks and Stamps: Post & Go Birds of Britain

Robert Gillmor, ornithologist, artist, illustrator and author, was commissioned by Royal Mail to produce four series of stamps (now available from Post & Go machines) featuring British birds. Brought together for the first time in larger-than-stamp size, these prints demonstrate the author s lifelong love and appreciation of our nation s garden birds.

The pictures are brought to life by the author s own account of the process by which his lino-cuts are made, along with anecdotal descriptions of his bird encounters along the way. This beautifully-produced collection will be coveted by wildlife lovers, artists and stamp collectors alike.

Cover Birds

Now an internationally famous wildlife artist, Robert Gillmor was already a keen bird-watcher at the age of 11 when the Reading Ornithological Club (launched in 1947) invited him to join them as a visitor; at 13 he was elected as their first junior member. He was also learning the art of lino-cutting at Leighton Park School, and the Club's 1949 annual report bore his linocut of a Canada Goose on its first printed cover. Over sixty years on he is still producing his wonderful representations of birds for the covers, particularly the more interesting sightings of each year. This book is the story of his formative bird-watching and print-making years. Illustrated with the images from the covers themselves, it is a beguiling account of the development of both artist and bird-lover.

Allen W. Seaby: Art And Nature

Allen W. Seaby's life has been described as "a classic tale of Victorian self-improvement." But there is more to the tale than just upward mobility. A. W. Seaby was a pioneering, innovative and inspirational man who rose to become a prominent print-maker, teacher, author and illustrator. Best-known for his colour woodcut printing using traditional Japanese methods, and as a prominent wildlife artist, the story of Seaby's many accomplishments is recounted by his grandson, who inherited Seaby's love of birds and became internationally renowned in his own right, Robert Gillmor. Alongside this personal recount, Martin Andrews (Seaby's successor as President of the Reading Guild of Artists) selects aspects of his career and expands upon his techniques, his illustrative methods, his circle of fellow artists and the books he published to give a full and rounded account of a man whose work is currently enjoying a well-deserved renaissance.

Art of the New Naturalists: A Complete History

The stunning, specially commissioned cover illustrations are one of the great joys of the New Naturalist series, lending it a distinctive style which has inspired nature enthusiasts for many decades.

The Collins New Naturalist series is the longest-running and arguably the most influential natural history series in the world with over 100 volumes published in over 60 years. Throughout the years, the highly characteristic dust jacket illustrations have become iconic, lifting the books to a level of collectability and increasing the level of admiration for an already well-established and respected series.

With early cover illustrations prepared by Clifford and Rosemary Ellis, later and more recent covers have been designed by Robert Gillmor. Featuring prints of the awe-inspiring artwork of the New Naturalists, the book will offer a unique insight into Gillmor’s approach to each subject matter and the intricate and creative way through which he has brought his own distinctive style and craft of printmaking to the New Naturalist series.
